“Peter Gardner is a highly decorated soccer coach with a long and impactful career in Maine. He coached the Brunswick High School boys’ soccer team for 39 years, from 1972 until his retirement in 2012, and later came out of retirement to coach in Richmond. Gardner’s coaching tenure at Brunswick High School was marked by significant success. He accumulated 463 wins with the Dragons, leading them to eight state Class A championships and ten state final appearances. During that time period his team won 10 Eastern Maine Class Regional Championships. After his “retirement,” he began coaching the boys’ soccer team in his hometown of Richmond. That first year back on the pitch his Richmond team won the Class D State Championship with a perfect 18 – 0 – 0 record. In 2023, he tied the all-time state record for boys’ and girls’ soccer coaching wins with 566 career victories. At the end of the 2025 Fall Soccer Season Peter’s record setting career win total stands at 613 (and counting). His contributions to Maine soccer extend beyond his win-loss record. He was honored with the Maine Soccer Coaches Service Award in 2013 for his dedication to the sport. He was also a Vice President for the Boy’s East division of the Maine Soccer Coaches for over 20 years. His career in Brunswick also included a long tenure in the school system, where he worked for 43 years as a math teacher and an assistant principal.”

In 2023, he tied the all-time state record for boys’ and girls’ soccer coaching wins with 566 career victories. As the end of the 2024 Fall Soccer Season Coach Gardner’s record seeting career win total stands at 608 (and counting).

Gardner’s contributions to Maine soccer extend beyond his win-loss record. He was honored with the Maine Soccer Coaches Service Award in 2013 for his dedication to the sport. He was also a Vice President for the Boy’s East division of the Maine Soccer Coaches for over 20 years.

Gardner’s career in Brunswick also included a long tenure in the school system, where he worked for 43 years as a math teacher and an assistant principal. The Brunswick High School Class of 1980 has established a perpetual scholarship in his name through the Brunswick Area Student Aid Fund (BASAF) to honor his legacy.
