Ken Roberts is a highly notable figure in Yarmouth and Maine athletics, recognized for his wide-ranging contributions as a Soccer Coach, Athletic Director, Referee, and MPA Heal Point Statistician. He is being inducted into the Maine Soccer Hall of Fame under the Referee category. Ken coached the Yarmouth Boys Soccer Team from 1969 to 1973 and again in 1979. He amassed a coaching record of 114 wins, 37 losses, and 7 ties. His teams won seven Cumberland County Conference Championships in the 1960’s and 1970’s. He led Yarmouth to the Class B State Championship in 1973. He received the Maine High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year award in 1968. He served as Yarmouth High School’s Athletic Director from 1985 to 2002. He was the MPA Heal Point Statistician from 1974 to 2002, calculating the final standings for the tournament. He was a referee for the Western Maine Board of Officials for 40 years and officiated local college games for 39 years. He was a key figure in organizing and training referee boards, including the Northern Maine Board of Approved Soccer Officials in 1962. He was one of the “Founders” of the Greater Portland Men’s Summer Soccer League in 1971. He attended Gorham State Teachers College, now USM, from 1959 –1961, where he was the team captain, led the team in scoring, and was the Team’s MVP in 1961. His dedication led to his selection into the MPA Hall of Excellence. He was also inducted into the USM Hall of Fame in 1986 as part of its inaugural class.

Ken Roberts is a notable figure in community of Yarmouth, and State of Maine athletics, recognized for his contributions as a Soccer Coach, Athletic Director, Referee, and MPA Heal Point Statistician. He served as the Yarmouth High School’s Athletic Director from 1985 – 2002, and was the Boys Soccer Coach from 1969 to 1973 and in 1979. As the MPA Statistician he calculated the Final Heal Point Standings which aligned team for the Tournament. Prior to entering the Teaching and Coaching Area, Ken attended Gorham State Teachers College (late UMPG and now USM) from 1959 – 1961 where he led the team in scoring was the captain in his senior Year. Local Newspaper Articles account his scoring a dozen goals in five game stretch for Gorham State. In 1961 he scored 17 goals and was the Team’s MVP.
His success as a player laid the foundation for his future contributions to the sport. His dedication to the school’s athletic program was recognized with his selection into the MPA Hall of Excellence, a title he was awarded as a “long time Yarmouth AD.” Additionally, there is a Roberts Scholarship Fund that supports graduates of Yarmouth High School. He was later inducted into the USM Hall of Fame in 1986 as part of its inaugural class.


Roberts coached the Yarmouth High School soccer team amassing an impressive coaching record of 114 wins, 37 losses, and 7 ties. His Yarmouth teams won seven Cumberland County Conference Championships. The pinnacle of his coaching career was in 1973, when he led his team to the Class B State Championship. They went on to qualify for the New England Tournament after defeating the Class A champions, ultimately losing in a thrilling 3-2 match in eight overtimes. His coaching excellence was recognized with the Maine High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year award in 1968.

Roberts’ impact on soccer extended to refereeing and administration. He was a referee for the Western Maine Board of Officials for 40 years and officiated local college games for 39 years. He was a key figure in organizing and training referee boards, including the Northern Maine Board of Approved Soccer Officials in 1962. A true pioneer, he was also one of the “Founders” of the Greater Portland Men’s Summer Soccer League in 1971 and organized coaching and referee clinics in New England from 1962 to 1975. He helped organize and presented in State Principals Association Clinics beginning in 1962, and every year until the Clinics were not held. Specifically, at the 1965 SPA Sponsored Clinic Roberts presented the issues around starting a High School Soccer Program. Roberts’ dedication to the sport was further demonstrated by his long service as the MPA Heal Point Statistician from 1974 to 2002.
