“John Cullen was the highly successful coach of the women’s soccer team at Bowdoin College from 1985 to 2004. He is recognized for his remarkable achievements and is a prominent figure in Maine college sports history. During his 22-year tenure, Cullen’s teams compiled a record of 238 wins against 85 losses and 24 ties, ranking him among the top 15 in Division III history in both victories and winning percentage, and, giving him the most total career wins for a women’s college coach in Maine. He coached 17 United Soccer Coaches All-Americans and led his teams to multiple championships, including the 1987 NIAC Champions and back-to-back ECAC Championships in 1992 and 1993. Cullen received several prestigious honors for his coaching prowess, being named New England Coach of the Year in 1989, 1992, and 1995. In 1995, he earned the highest recognition in his field when he was named the NSCAA (United Soccer Coaches) National Division III Coach of the Year. In 2014, John Cullen’s legacy was further cemented when he was inducted into the Bowdoin Athletic Hall of Honor and granted “Coach Emeritus” status by the college.”
